About Himalayan Salt Crystal Lamp

By  |

We have heard so much about Himalayan Salt Lamp and read loads of   its benefits but somehow we don’t quite understand how it really works.

Here are some of the details we learned  and later will post about their benefits and how to use it.

All matter (the human body, air, water, etc) is made up of molecules which are made up of atoms which are made up of three types of particles: protons (positive charge), electrons (negative charge), and neutrons (no charge). Electrons orbit their molecules like planets revolve around a star. Occasionally an electron flies off and when it does, it leaves behind a positively-charged ion whose sole purpose in life becomes to fill the void left by its little lost electron. In other words: it wants to steal a replacement electron from another molecule. Due to differences in molecular structure (number of electrons in the outermost orbit, strength and structure of electron bonds, etc) some materials lose electrons much more easily than others.

Health Benefits of Himalayan Salt Lamps

People using salt lamps report improvement in their physical and mental well-being soon after starting to light them. They are said to help with:

  • respiratory problems (including colds)
  • allergies
  • skin conditions
  • mental and stress-related disorders (including insomnia)
  • headaches and migraines
  • rheumatism
  • blood system disorders.

Due to their calming colors (different shades of orange and pink), rock lamps have also been used in color therapy to help treat neurotic disorders and sleeplessness.

The Himalayan salt lamps have other health benefits and they have been recommended for anyone wishing to:

  • Improve the quality of air in their immediate environment.
  • Achieve a feeling of relaxation and meditation.
  • Improve various health disorders and maintain good health.

Pink Himalayan Salt Lamps in your Home: Where to Place Them

Don’t expect massive improvements if you tuck away a single rock lamp in the far corner of your house where no-one ever goes. These lamps have a limited range. You will achieve best results if you place them somewhere where you and your family spend a lot of time, or where there are a lot of electronic appliances.

It is suggested to have more than just one pink Himalayan rock salt lamp. You can start with one of course and then add to your collection as you go along. It’s similar to plants – the more the better. You should aim to have at least one in every room you frequently use, such as bedrooms and living rooms.

Think about the following:

  • Where do you spend most time?
  • Where do you have a lot of ‘electronic smog’ from computers, TVs, mobile phones, etc.?
  • Where would you like to enjoy the lamp’s relaxing effects?

Then, place your salt lamps in these areas.

Another way to improve the quality of air in your house is by frequently airing the place, so the air can circulate. In the winter months or when there are high levels of air pollution, it might be difficult to leave the windows open and sufficiently air all the rooms. That is when the salt lamps can be particularly useful and can help cleanse the air and remove the stubborn winter bugs.

There are a lot of fake and cheaper versions on the market that don’t use Himalayan salt. You should check the origin of the lamp you are purchasing. The real lamp is made from pure, food grade Himalayan salt. Substitutes from rock salt will not provide you with the same benefits.

How do Salt Crystal Lamps Work?

Himalayan salt lamps emit negative ions.

The bulb inside of the lamp heats the crystal and supports the ionizing effect. Salt itself is hygroscopic and attracts the water from the surroundings. You can often see that the salt lamp is damp or even wet, especially in more humid environments. So to the nature of salt & its ability to draw moisture out of a substance, if you live in a high-humidity climate your salt lamp may “sweat” a bit. Keeping your lamp lit helps  prevent the sweating due to the heat from the bulb or candle. They go on to bind with excessive positive ions (bacteria, molds and allergens all carry a positive charge) and neutralize the electronic smog in your home.

Moreover, pink Himalayan salt lamp is a very pure source of light and its multi-colored glow has a soothing effect and relaxes you.

HOW LONG DO THE SALT LAMPS LAST?

As long as they are not immersed in water (it is salt and will dissolve). You will never have to replace your lamp.

It’s best to leave lamps on 24/7 for optimal results but to store them for long periods, wrap in plastic or use a large plastic zipper bag.

If turned off or the bulb wattage is too low in humid climates, a salt lamp may sweat as they are natural dehumidifiers.

HOW DO I CLEAN THEM?

They do not get dirty or dusty. However, if they have been turned off or stored you can periodically wipe with a damp cloth. (Unplug first)

When lamp is not in use (turned off) and they are in a humid environment they will sweat, place something under lamp (placemat or coaster), to prevent damage to furniture.

You may also store it by wrapping in a plastic bag to prevent further sweating.

SALT LAMPS ARE HEAVY SO WATCH CHILDREN AROUND THEM, AS WE WOULD NOT WANT THEM TO BREAK OR HURT A TOE.

IS HIMALAYAN SALT SAFE TO CONSUME?

Regular table salt is a poison for humans. Our body can’t process it correctly which sometimes leads to Gout, Arthritis, and other ailments. Himalayan Salt is the best salt for the human body. No anti-caking agents, no preservatives and is full of the same trace minerals found in your body. That is why it works for so many symptoms (headaches, acid reflux, leg cramps) and actually aides in detoxifying. Many people with high or low BP have had their pressures normalize once they switch to Himalayan Salt. We’ve actually had people call or come into our store thanking us and crying because of the profound effect this salt has had on their body. It is truly nature’s gift to humans.
